May is Tiji month in Lo Manthang, three days of masked dances in the square, usually in May by the Tibetan calendar. The whole of Upper Mustang is in season, the barley is green, and the caves at Chhoser are easy to visit. Dolpo opens properly: Phoksundo Lake and the Tarap valley are in good condition by mid to late May. Pre-monsoon haze can soften mountain views.
