Visit Rachen Gompa nunnery
Spend time at Rachen Gompa, one of the main nunneries of the Tsum Valley, where Buddhist nuns study, pray and look after the monastery, and learn how the community lives under the Shyagya vow.

Rachen Gompa lies on the main trail in upper Tsum, a cluster of buildings around a prayer hall. It is home to Buddhist nuns of all ages, from girls in their first years of study to elderly ani who have lived here for decades. It is an important centre of learning and practice in the valley.
If prayers are being held, you may be allowed to sit quietly at the back of the hall as the nuns chant, beat drums and play horns. Your guide explains what is happening and who the deities on the altar are. Outside, nuns work in the gardens, carry water and wood, and study texts.
Visit respectfully, ask before taking photographs, and leave a donation to support the nunnery. It is a chance to see how Tibetan Buddhism lives day to day in this valley, and how women's religious life is organised in the Himalaya.

Questions
Can men visit Rachen Gompa?
Yes, visitors of any gender can visit the nunnery respectfully during the day. Dress modestly, keep your voice low, follow your guide and do not enter private quarters. Ask permission before photographing nuns, and be particularly careful during prayers.
Can I stay overnight at Rachen Gompa?
There are sometimes simple guest rooms at or near the nunnery, and lodges or homestays nearby. Availability varies by season and by the nunnery's needs. Your agency will arrange accommodation in advance. If you do stay, offer a donation and follow the nunnery's routines.
How should I donate at a Tsum gompa?
Place a donation in the offering box or give it to a senior monk or nun, ideally in an envelope or folded with both hands. NPR 500 to 1,000 is a generous amount for a visitor. Do not give money directly to young novices. Donations support food, butter lamps and repairs.
