From Chhokangparo the trail continues north-east past Lamagaon and Rachen Gompa to Nile and Chhule, the last villages, then climbs gently to Mu Gompa. The valley widens and the land turns dry and open, more like Tibet than the forested lower valley. Mani walls and chortens line the route.

Mu Gompa stands on a slope at around 3,700 m, with prayer flags strung above and views up the valley toward the border passes. Monks live here year-round, and visitors can stay in simple guest rooms or nearby lodges. Morning and evening prayers fill the halls with chanting and the smell of juniper.

Spend a night or two at Mu Gompa or Nile for acclimatisation and short side hikes up the valley. Then return down the valley. It is the furthest point of most Tsum treks, and the quietest.

Questions

How high is Mu Gompa?

Mu Gompa sits at around 3,700 m near the head of the Tsum Valley. Most trekkers reach it from Chhokangparo, about 3,030 m, in two days via Nile. Altitude sickness is possible, so walk slowly, drink plenty of water and spend a night at Nile or Chhule before going higher.

Can visitors stay at Mu Gompa?

Simple guest rooms are sometimes available at or near the monastery, and Nile and Chhule have homestays and small lodges. Arrangements change from season to season. Your agency will confirm before you go. Offer a donation if you stay at the gompa or join prayers.

Can I cross into Tibet from Mu Gompa?

No. Trails continue toward border passes, but foreign trekkers are not permitted to cross into Tibet from Tsum, and there is no official crossing here. Your permit covers the Tsum Valley only. Going beyond the permitted area is illegal and dangerous.
