Milarepa's cave at Piren Phu
A short pilgrimage walk from Chhokangparo to Piren Phu, the pigeon cave linked by Buddhist tradition with the Tibetan yogi Milarepa, now a small shrine with prayer flags and butter lamps.

Milarepa, the 11th and 12th century Tibetan yogi and poet, is one of the most loved figures of Tibetan Buddhism. Tradition holds that he meditated in caves in Tsum, and Piren Phu, near Chhokangparo, is the best known. A small gompa has been built at the cave, with prayer flags and lamps.
Your guide takes you up the short path to the cave, explaining Milarepa's life story: his early wrongdoing, his harsh training under his teacher Marpa, and his years of solitary meditation in Himalayan caves. Inside, pilgrims point out a footprint in the rock that they believe is his.
Visit quietly, walk clockwise and leave a small offering. On the way back, stop at mani walls and chortens, and look across the valley to Ganesh Himal.
