Janai Purnima fair on the high pastures
Join thousands of pilgrims at Badimalika for the Janai Purnima fair, with fasting, bathing at Triveni, sacred threads, offerings at the temple and Deuda songs sung through the night on the pastures.

Janai Purnima is the full moon of the month of Shrawan, usually in August, when Hindu men renew their sacred thread and people across Nepal tie protective threads on their wrists. At Badimalika it is the occasion for the biggest pilgrimage of the year, with Malika Chaturdashi celebrated on the eve.
Pilgrims walk for days from Bajura, Achham, Kalikot, Jumla and further afield. They camp at Triveni and on the pastures, bathe in the streams, climb to the temple with offerings and spend the nights singing Deuda in circles of linked arms. Temporary tea shops under tarpaulin sell tea, noodles and snacks.
It falls in the monsoon, so expect rain, mud, cloud and cold nights. Bring full waterproof gear, a strong tent and plenty of patience. If you want to experience a Himalayan pilgrimage at full strength, there are few better places.
