Tandem paragliding from Sarangkot over Phewa

Run off Sarangkot's slope strapped to a licensed pilot and circle on thermals above Phewa Lake with the Annapurnas behind you, then glide down to land at Lakeside. Flights last 20–30 minutes, with longer cross-country options.

Pokhara's paragliding works because of its geography: a south-facing ridge 800 m above a lake, warming fast in the morning sun, with a flat landing field at the water's edge. Operators collect you from Lakeside offices and drive up to the launch area just below the Sarangkot viewpoint. After a briefing and harness check you wait for the right breeze, then take a few running steps and lift off. Pilots give a short safety briefing first.

Most standard flights last 20–30 minutes, with longer cross-country flights for those who want more time in the air. Pilots ride thermals up above the launch, and on good days you can see Machhapuchhre and the Annapurnas over the ridge and Phewa directly below. Black kites and Himalayan griffon vultures often share the same thermals. Pilots often carry cameras on a pole and can film the flight for an extra fee. If you feel unwell in the air, tell the pilot: they can bring you down early and fly more gently.

The landing field is by the lake at the north end of Lakeside. Choose a registered operator with insured pilots, tell them about any health issues, and wear closed shoes and a warm layer. Flights stop in rain, low cloud or strong winds, and in the monsoon they are often cancelled for days. Book with a spare morning after the planned flight, so a weather cancellation can simply move a day. Eat a light breakfast; a full stomach and spiralling turns do not go well together.

Questions

Is paragliding in Pokhara safe?

Tandem paragliding with a registered operator and a licensed pilot has a good record in Pokhara, but it is an adventure sport with real risk. Choose established companies, check that the pilot is licensed and insured, follow the briefing and do not fly in poor weather. Check that your travel insurance covers paragliding. Operators decide on safety; respect a cancellation.

What is the best time of year for paragliding in Pokhara?

October to early December gives the clearest views and steady flying, and February to May has good thermals with more haze. Flights usually run from late morning when the slope has warmed. The monsoon, June to September, brings frequent cancellations. Book for early in your stay so a weather cancellation can be moved to another day.

Is there a weight or age limit for tandem paragliding?

Operators set their own limits, commonly a maximum body weight around 100–110 kg and a minimum age with parental consent for children. Older travellers fly regularly if they can take a few running steps at launch. Tell the operator about heart, back or pregnancy issues; they may decline. Ask the specific company before booking.
