Up the Tarap Khola gorge to Dho
The approach to Dho Tarap from Juphal: five to six days up the Thuli Bheri and then the deep, narrow gorge of the Tarap Khola, on trails cut into cliffs and over wooden bridges, climbing from forest to bare high valley.

From Juphal we walk down to Dunai, the district headquarters on the Thuli Bheri, and follow that river east for a day or two through villages such as Tarakot, an old fortified settlement on a hill above the river. Then the trail turns north into the Tarap Khola, and the valley quickly narrows into a deep gorge. Pine and juniper forest cling to the slopes, and the river roars below.
For two or three days the trail threads through the gorge, sometimes on paths built out from the cliff on stone and wood, sometimes crossing the river on log bridges or small suspension bridges. Camps are in clearings by the river, sheltered by the trees while they last. This is wild, empty country; you may meet only herders and occasional mule trains carrying supplies up to Dho. Days settle into a steady rhythm of walking, tea and camp.
Gradually the trees thin and disappear, the valley widens, and the air turns dry and thin. On the last day you climb into the open upper valley and see the stone villages of Dho Tarap ahead, at about 4,040 m. The steady gain over six days is good for acclimatisation. Trails in the gorge can be damaged by rockfall or floods; check current status before you travel. Few arrivals in Nepal feel as well earned.

Questions
How many days does it take to trek to Dho Tarap?
From Juphal airport, it usually takes 5–6 days to reach Dho Tarap via Dunai, Tarakot and the Tarap Khola gorge, walking 5–7 hours a day. The full Lower Dolpo circuit, continuing over the Numa La and Baga La to Phoksundo Lake and back to Juphal, takes about 12–14 days.
Is the Tarap Khola gorge trail dangerous?
It is a rough trail with narrow sections cut into the cliffs, log bridges and occasional rockfall, but it is used regularly by villagers and mule trains. With a good guide, care on exposed sections and no rushing, it is manageable for experienced trekkers. Floods and landslides can damage it; check current status before you travel.
Are there lodges on the way to Dho Tarap?
There are very few lodges, and they are basic. Most treks to Dho Tarap camp, with tents, a cook and porters or mules. Some villages, such as Dunai and Tarakot, have simple guesthouses. A fully supported camping trek is the reliable choice for Lower Dolpo, especially over the passes.
