The journey starts on still water, with Phewa Lake and the Annapurnas, and then the road drops south along the Andhi Khola and the Kali Gandaki, past Syangja's terraced hills and across the Kali Gandaki at Ramdi. Tansen arrives on a ridge, a bazaar of cobbled lanes where Newar merchants built tall houses and Magar villages farm the slopes around. From its hilltop at Shreenagar the Himalaya shows one last time. Then the road falls in hairpins to Butwal, and the Terai opens flat and hot. At Lumbini, a stone pillar raised by the emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE names this as the place where the Buddha was born. The last stop is Chitwan, where Tharu villages sit on the edge of the forest and rhinos graze the grasslands along the Rapti river.

This is the road trip most visitors never take: south out of the Annapurna foothills on the Siddhartha Highway, through deep river gorges and ridge-top bazaars, down to the hot, flat Terai along the Indian border. In nine days you go from 1,600 m at Sarangkot to about 150 m at Lumbini, and from Machhapuchhre on the skyline to sal forest and rhinos. Each stop feels like a different country.

We stop at Tansen, a Newar and Magar hill town that most travellers drive past, for its old palace and its dhaka weaving. At Lumbini you have a full day for the Sacred Garden and the monastic zone. Chitwan gets three nights, enough for a jeep safari, a canoe on the Rapti, a jungle walk and a Tharu village. The road sections are 3 to 6 hours each, in a private car with a driver who knows them.

Questions

About this trip

How far is Lumbini from Pokhara?

By road Lumbini is about 200 km from Pokhara via the Siddhartha Highway, Butwal and Bhairahawa, roughly 7 to 8 hours of driving with stops. We break it with a night in Tansen, which makes the trip easier and adds a beautiful hill town. There are also flights from Pokhara and Kathmandu to Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa.

Is it worth visiting Tansen?

Yes, if you like old towns with few tourists. Tansen is a hill bazaar of Newar houses, temples and cobbled lanes in Palpa district, known for dhaka weaving and karuwa brass pots. It is a natural halfway stop between Pokhara and Lumbini, and the view from Shreenagar hill reaches the Himalaya on clear mornings.

How many days do I need in Lumbini?

One full day is enough for the Sacred Garden with the Maya Devi Temple and Ashoka Pillar and a tour of the main monasteries in the monastic zone. Two nights let you visit at dawn and dusk, when it is cooler and quieter. Add another day for Tilaurakot, the site often identified with ancient Kapilavastu.

Will I see rhinos in Chitwan?

Almost certainly. Chitwan has one of the largest populations of greater one-horned rhinoceros in the world, and most visitors see them on a jeep safari, a canoe trip or even from the Rapti riverbank in Sauraha. Tigers are present but shy, and only a small share of visitors see one.

What is the best time for this overland trip?

October to March is ideal: clear in Pokhara, comfortable in Lumbini and good for wildlife in Chitwan. February and March are best for wildlife as grass is cut. April and May are very hot in the Terai. Monsoon, June to September, is wet, with some road delays and limited jungle access.

Is the Siddhartha Highway safe?

It is a winding mountain road with heavy traffic in places, especially trucks between Butwal and Pokhara. With an experienced private driver, travelling in daylight, it is the normal route and used daily. In monsoon, landslides can block it for hours, so we keep spare time in the plan.

What should I wear at Lumbini?

Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, especially inside the Maya Devi Temple and monasteries. Shoes are removed before entering the temple and shrine halls. Light, loose cotton clothes help in the heat, along with a hat and sunscreen for walking between monasteries.

Can I fly instead of driving between Lumbini and Kathmandu?

Yes. Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa is about 20 km from Lumbini and has flights to Kathmandu of about 40 minutes. From Chitwan, Bharatpur airport has short flights to Kathmandu. Flying saves a day of driving but you miss the river valleys and Tansen.

How much does this overland trip cost?

Our 8-night overland trip starts from USD 1,300 per person, twin sharing, including a private car and guide, all hotels named, full board in Chitwan with park activities and entry fees, and dinners in Tansen and Lumbini. Flights to Pokhara and the optional flight from Bharatpur are extra.
