The trip climbs in two waves. The first is the road: from the rice of Jhapa up through tea at Kanyam and Ilam, then north on the Mechi Highway through Panchthar, where Limbu farmhouses stand among orange trees and maize, to Phungling high above the Tamor. The second is on foot, before dawn, on a stone stair through forest of rhododendron and fir, with tea shops and bell-sellers along the way and families climbing with offerings in their hands. At the top the air is thin and bright, the shrine is wrapped in bells and red cloth, and Kanchenjunga stands to the north-east like a wall. Then the long road home, back to tea and warm evenings.

Pathibhara Devi is one of the most visited shrines in eastern Nepal. Families come from across the country and from Sikkim and Darjeeling to climb to the hilltop above Taplejung, ring the bells, tie red cloth and ask the goddess for a child, a job, a safe journey or a good harvest. For the Limbu people the same hill is Mukkumlung, a sacred place in their own Kirat tradition. On a clear day the summit looks straight at Kanchenjunga.

We plan this as a pilgrimage first and a sightseeing trip second. The road days are long, so we break them with nights in Ilam, and we give the climb a full day from Phungling with an early start. A guide who knows the temple and its customs walks with you, explains what to bring and what to do, and makes sure you are welcome whether you come to worship or simply to watch and learn.

Questions

About this trip

How long is the walk to Pathibhara Devi?

From the road head below the hill, the stepped trail takes about 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down for most fit walkers. It is steep and at altitude, reaching 3,794 m, so take it slowly. Tea shops along the way sell drinks and snacks. We start before dawn from Phungling so you reach the top in the clearer morning hours.

Can non-Hindus visit Pathibhara temple?

Yes. Visitors of any faith are welcome to climb to Pathibhara and to watch the worship respectfully. Follow the customs your guide explains: remove shoes where asked, walk clockwise, avoid leather near the shrine and ask before photographing people at prayer. Many foreign visitors come as much for the walk and the views of Kanchenjunga as for the temple.

What does Mukkumlung mean?

Mukkumlung is the Limbu name for the Pathibhara hill, which is sacred in the Kirat tradition of the Limbu people as well as in Hindu worship of the goddess. Your guide can explain how the two traditions meet here. Using the Limbu name when you talk to local people is a small sign of respect for the community whose land this is.

How do I get to Pathibhara from Kathmandu?

Most visitors fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, about 50 minutes, then drive through Ilam and Panchthar to Phungling in Taplejung, which takes a long day or two shorter ones. Flights to Suketar airport above Phungling have run at times but are irregular. From Phungling a road climbs to the foot of the hill and the last part is on foot.

When is the best time to visit Pathibhara?

October and November bring the clearest mountain views, and March to April is pleasant with rhododendrons in the forest. The temple is open all year and very busy at Dashain and other festivals. In winter the summit can be icy and snowy, and in the monsoon the trail is wet and views are poor. Weekdays are quieter than Saturdays.

Is there accommodation near Pathibhara temple?

Yes, there are simple pilgrim lodges and tea-house rooms near the road head below the hill, as well as small hotels in Phungling bazaar. The lodges near the hill are basic, with shared toilets and thick blankets, and fill quickly on festival days. We base this trip in Phungling and drive to the road head before dawn.

Can I see Kanchenjunga from Pathibhara?

Yes, on a clear morning Kanchenjunga and its neighbours, including Jannu, stand on the north-eastern skyline from the summit of Pathibhara. The view is clearest from October to December. Cloud often builds by late morning, which is one reason we start the climb before dawn and aim to reach the top early.

Is a porter or pony available for the climb?

Yes, local porters can carry your bag, and on some days ponies or horses are available for part of the trail for those who find the steps hard. They are arranged locally at the road head and paid directly. Tell us in advance if you have knee problems or other concerns, and we will plan the day around your pace.

How much does the Pathibhara pilgrimage cost?

Our five-night trip is from USD 950 per person, twin sharing. That includes return flights to Bhadrapur, a private car and jeep for all road days, a licensed guide, five nights in simple hotels in Ilam, Phungling and Kanyam, a tea factory visit and the meals listed. Temple offerings, porters and tips are extra.
