Kathmandu to Ilam
Kathmandu to Ilam is about 600 km by road, 14–16 hours by overnight bus. The quicker way is a 45–50 minute flight to Bhadrapur in Jhapa, then about 100 km and 3–4 hours by car up the Mechi Highway through Birtamod or Charali and the tea hills of Kanyam.

Night buses leave Kathmandu in the afternoon and reach Ilam the next morning, via the East–West Highway and Birtamod. It is cheap but long and tiring, with rest stops at roadside restaurants. Choose a reputable operator and a front seat if you get carsick. Some buses go only to Birtamod, where you change for Ilam.
A private car lets you break the drive, for example with a night in Chitwan, Janakpur or the Koshi Tappu area, then continue east along the East–West Highway and up the Mechi Highway. It suits families and anyone who wants to see the Terai on the way.

Can I stop at Kanyam on the way to Ilam?
Yes. Kanyam lies on the Mechi Highway between the Terai and Ilam, so it is an easy stop of an hour or more for the tea garden. If you have time, spend a night nearby for sunrise at Antu Danda.
Is the road to Ilam safe?
The Mechi Highway is paved and well used, but steep and winding, and landslides can block it in the monsoon from June to September. Travel in daylight with an experienced driver, and check current status before you travel.
