Walk the ridge between Begnas and Rupa lakes
An easy village walk up the Panchabhaiya ridge that separates Begnas from Rupa Lake, with both lakes below you, the Annapurnas to the north and farm paths through terraces and small hamlets. Allow about three hours.

From Begnas bazaar, paved and stone paths climb south onto the ridge. It is a gentle walk, 150–200 m of ascent, through terraced fields, bamboo groves and small settlements where women sit on porches sorting grain. As you gain height, Begnas appears behind you and Rupa ahead, two very different lakes: one long and blue, the other small, reedy and green. Children on the path will often greet you with namaste and walk alongside for a while.
The ridge has viewpoints and small tea shops. On a clear morning the whole Annapurna range sits above the hills, with Machhapuchhre in the middle. Below, you can see how the valley is farmed: rice terraces on every slope, kulo channels carrying water from the lake, fish ponds in the flats. In July you may see whole families planting rice in flooded fields; in October the terraces turn gold before harvest.
Drop down to Rupa Lake's shore and walk along its edge to look for herons, egrets and, in winter, ducks. Then return to the ridge and Begnas, or arrange for your taxi to meet you at the Rupa side. Allow three hours with stops. Carry water; shops are basic. The paths are clear but branch often, so a local guide or an offline map helps. Spring afternoons can be hot on the open ridge, so go in the morning and wear a hat.

Questions
How difficult is the walk between Begnas and Rupa lakes?
It is easy to moderate: about 150–200 m up to the ridge on paved paths and stone steps, then down to Rupa's shore. Most people complete a loop in 2–3 hours. There is no exposure and the paths pass through villages, so you can stop for tea. Wear walking shoes; it is slippery after rain.
Where is Rupa Lake?
Rupa Lake lies just south of Begnas, across the Panchabhaiya ridge, on the boundary of Pokhara and Rupa Rural Municipality. It is about 1.35 km2 and shallow, about 3 m deep on average, with reed beds. You can walk from Begnas in 1–2 hours or drive round by road. It is far less visited than Begnas or Phewa.
Can I see birds at Rupa Lake?
Yes, it is one of the best birding lakes near Pokhara. Thirty-six waterbird species have been recorded, including herons, egrets, cormorants and kingfishers, with migrant ducks in winter. Go early in the morning from November to February and bring binoculars. A local birding guide from Pokhara can help with identification.
