Watch Tiji's masked dances in the palace square
Time your trip for Tiji, the three-day festival in May when the monks of Chhoede gompa perform masked dances in front of the royal palace, telling the story of Dorje Jono and the demon to purify Lo for the year ahead. The most important event of the year in Lo Manthang.

Tiji is held over three days in the third month of the Tibetan calendar, usually in May. The dates are fixed each year by the lamas of Chhoede gompa. People from all over Upper Mustang come to Lo Manthang in their best clothes, and the palace square fills with families, monks, traders and visitors. Long horns and drums announce each day's dances, and every rooftop around the square fills with spectators.
The masked dances, performed by Chhoede's monks, tell the legend of Dorje Jono, who defeats a demon that has brought drought and suffering to Lo. Each day has its own dances, building to the destruction of the demon's effigy on the last day, when the land is purified for the year. The dances are long, slow and hypnotic, with moments of drama, and people watch for hours from the square and the rooftops.
To see Tiji, plan months ahead. Lodges fill up and the restricted area permit should be arranged early. Arrive in Lo Manthang a day or two before to acclimatise. Find a spot in the square early each morning, bring a cushion, sun hat and warm layers, and keep your camera discreet. Never step into the dance area, and follow the stewards' instructions. Patience is rewarded; the best moments often come late in the day.

Questions
When is the Tiji festival in Lo Manthang?
Tiji is held over three days in the third month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, usually in May. In 2026 it fell on 14–16 May. The lamas of Chhoede gompa set the dates each year, so they move against the Western calendar. Check current dates before you travel and book early.
Can tourists attend Tiji?
Yes, visitors are welcome to watch the dances in the palace square, as long as they are respectful. Do not step into the dance area, keep your voice low during rituals, ask before photographing people and never use flash. Stewards may ask you to move; follow their instructions. Arrive early to find a good spot.
How far ahead should I book for Tiji?
Book at least four to six months ahead. Lodges in Lo Manthang fill up for Tiji, flights to Jomsom are busy, and the restricted area permit must be arranged through a registered agency. We plan Tiji trips with an extra buffer day before and after the festival for weather and road delays.
