We leave Tamghas in the dark with a local guide, walking up through the edge of town into the forest. The trail climbs steadily on stone steps and earth paths, through oak, pine and, higher up, rhododendron, with breaks at viewpoints where the valleys of Gulmi open below.

The summit takes 3–4 hours. At the top are the temple, prayer flags and a clearing with views north. On good mornings from October to February you see Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range rising above the ridges.

After time at the temple and a packed breakfast, we walk down by a different trail through Magar and Brahmin villages, arriving in Tamghas by early afternoon.

Questions

How difficult is the Resunga hike?

It is a moderate day hike: about 3–4 hours up and 2–3 hours down from Tamghas, on forest trails and stone steps with steady climbing. No technical skills are needed, but you should be comfortable walking 6–7 hours on hills. Walking poles help on the descent.

Do I need a permit or guide for Resunga?

Resunga is outside Nepal's national parks and conservation areas, so no trekking permit is required. A local guide is strongly recommended, as forest trails branch and are not signposted. Check current status before you travel, as local rules on the sacred forest can change.

Can I see the Himalaya from Resunga?

Yes, on clear days. From the summit at about 2,347 m the view north includes Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range. Visibility is best at sunrise from October to February. From April haze increases, and from June to September clouds usually hide the peaks.
