Pilgrimage to the Buddhas of the past
A half-day pilgrimage linking Gotihawa and Niglihawa, the two sites Ashoka marked for the earlier Buddhas Krakuchchanda and Kanakamuni, with readings from the Buddhavamsa and time to chant at each.

Most pilgrims to Lumbini follow Gautama's life. This half day follows a different thread: the Buddhas who came before him. At Gotihawa, linked to Krakuchchanda, and at Niglihawa, linked to Kanakamuni, Ashoka left pillars to honour them.
Your guide brings short readings from the Buddhavamsa for each Buddha: where they were born, under which tree they found awakening, and how their lives mirror Gautama's. At each site there is time to circle the stupa or pillar and chant or sit quietly.
The two sites are a short drive apart. The half day can be joined to Tilaurakot and Kudan for a full Kapilvastu circuit, or done alone from Lumbini.

Questions
Which past Buddhas are linked to the Kapilvastu sites?
Tradition links Gotihawa with Krakuchchanda (Kakusandha) Buddha and Niglihawa with Kanakamuni (Konagamana) Buddha, the first two of the three Buddhas before Gautama in the present age. Ashoka's inscription at Niglihawa names Konakamana directly, which is why that link is the stronger of the two.
Can non-Buddhists join this pilgrimage?
Yes. The half day suits anyone interested in Buddhist ideas or early Indian history. You are welcome to take part in chanting or simply listen. Dress modestly, walk clockwise around stupas and pillars, and do not climb on the monuments.
Do we need a Buddhist monk to lead the pilgrimage?
No. Our guide leads the visit and readings. If you would like a monk to join for chanting, we can ask at one of the Lumbini monasteries in advance; this depends on their schedule and a donation is customary. Let us know when you book.
