Ashoka's pillar trail in one day
A full day from Lumbini to see all three Ashokan pillars in Nepal: the inscribed pillar at Lumbini, the inscribed fragments at Niglihawa and the stump at Gotihawa, with Tilaurakot and Kudan on the way.

Nepal holds three of Ashoka's pillars, all within about 30 km of each other. This day sees them in order. We start at dawn at Lumbini, where the pillar carries the inscription naming the Buddha's birthplace, and read the Brahmi line together.
Then we drive west to Niglihawa, where two pillar fragments lie beside a pond, one with an inscription recording that Ashoka enlarged the stupa of Konakamana Buddha. From there it is a short drive to Tilaurakot for the walls of Kapilavastu, and lunch in Taulihawa.
In the afternoon we see Kudan's stupas and finish at Gotihawa, where the broken pillar still stands in its base. By sunset we are back in Lumbini, about 70 km of driving in all.

Questions
How many Ashoka pillars are there in Nepal?
There are three Ashokan pillar sites in Nepal, all in the Lumbini area: the inscribed pillar at Lumbini, the inscribed fragments at Niglihawa (Nigali Sagar) and the uninscribed stump at Gotihawa. Others survive in India, such as Rampurva and Lauriya Nandangarh in the West Champaran district of Bihar.
How much driving is the Ashoka pillar day?
About 70 km in total on flat roads, broken into short drives of 15–60 minutes between sites. The full day runs about 8–9 hours including stops and lunch. We use a private car with a driver who knows the village roads around Taulihawa.
Can I read the Ashoka inscriptions myself?
The Lumbini inscription is behind a railing but legible, and your guide carries a transliteration and translation to follow letter by letter. The Niglihawa inscription is on a fragment lying on the ground and is harder to see. Brahmi is not hard to learn at a basic level, and the guide will show you how.
