Water prayer wheels and mani walls to Mundu
An easy morning walk from Langtang village to Mundu past long mani walls, chortens and small huts where streams turn prayer wheels day and night, with Langtang Lirung above.

Leaving Langtang village, the trail runs along the valley floor past mani walls, long lines of flat stones carved with Om mani padme hum and other prayers. Local custom is to keep them on your right as you walk. Some stones are newly carved, added after 2015 in memory of the dead.
Where streams cross the path you will find small stone huts housing wooden or metal prayer wheels turned by water. Each turn is believed to send the prayers inside out into the world. Prayer flags snap overhead in five colours, and chortens mark the way.
Mundu, 30 to 40 minutes on, is a small settlement with lodges and fields. From here you can continue to Kyanjin Gompa, or loop back. It is a gentle walk that suits an acclimatisation morning, with the valley widening and the glaciers of Langtang Lirung coming into view.

Questions
Why should I walk to the left of mani walls?
In Tibetan Buddhism you circle sacred objects clockwise, so the mani wall, chorten or prayer wheel stays on your right side as you pass. On the trail that usually means walking on the left of the wall. Local people do this automatically, and following it is a simple sign of respect.
Can I spin the water-driven prayer wheels?
They turn by themselves with the stream, so there is no need. Hand-turned prayer wheels at gompas and village entrances can be spun clockwise as you walk past. Do not stop or block water-driven wheels, and do not take stones from mani walls as souvenirs.
How far is Mundu from Langtang village?
About 30 to 40 minutes of easy walking, a little over 1 km with gentle ascent. Mundu has a few lodges and makes a quieter alternative to staying in Langtang village itself. From Mundu it is around 2 to 2.5 hours more to Kyanjin Gompa.
