Day hike to a high yak pasture
Climb from Langtang village to a kharka, a summer yak pasture above the valley, for wide views of Langtang Lirung and the valley floor. A good acclimatisation day before Kyanjin Gompa.
Above Langtang village, paths climb steeply through juniper and dwarf rhododendron to the kharka, high pastures where families take yaks, dzo and cattle in summer. Stone huts and walled enclosures mark each family's grazing area, and a few are still used each season.
From the pasture, at around 3,900 to 4,100 m depending on the route, you look down on the rebuilt village, the debris field and the river, and across to the snow peaks on the south side of the valley. Lammergeiers and Himalayan griffons ride the air above the ridges, and blue sheep are sometimes seen higher up.
The hike follows the rule of climbing high and sleeping low, helping your body adjust before you sleep at Kyanjin Gompa or go higher to Kyanjin Ri. Your guide sets the route according to the weather and your fitness, and turns back if clouds come in.

Questions
Is a rest day at Langtang village necessary?
It is not required, since Kyanjin Gompa is only 440 m higher. But if you have flown in or felt headaches on the way up, an extra day here with a short climb to a pasture helps. Most healthy trekkers continue to Kyanjin and take their acclimatisation day there instead.
What wildlife can I see near Langtang village?
Yaks and dzo are certain. Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, pikas and Himalayan monal pheasants are often seen on the slopes, and lammergeiers and griffon vultures overhead. Snow leopards and red pandas live in the national park but are rarely seen by trekkers. Early morning gives the best chance.
Do I need a guide for the pasture hike?
Yes. Paths to the kharka are faint, the weather changes quickly and it is easy to lose the way in cloud. Since April 2023 foreign trekkers in national parks are also required to walk with a licensed guide; check current status before you travel. Your trek guide will lead the hike.
