Sunrise climb to Kyanjin Ri

A steep pre-dawn climb from Kyanjin Gompa to the prayer-flag summit of Kyanjin Ri, about 4,600 m, for a close view of Langtang Lirung and the glaciers of the upper valley as the sun reaches them.

We leave the lodge with headlamps before first light. The trail climbs directly behind the village on a grassy, then rocky slope, gaining about 700 m to the lower summit. It is steep and you will stop often to breathe, but it has no technical sections. Prayer flags mark the top.

From the summit Langtang Lirung fills the view to the north-west, with the Lirung glacier pouring down its flank. Across the valley stand the peaks of the Langtang Himal and, further east, the snow ridges near the Tibetan border. Below you, Kyanjin's roofs and the moraines look tiny.

Stronger walkers can continue along the ridge to the higher summit of Kyanjin Ri, adding an hour. Come down the same way for a late breakfast and a rest day afternoon in the village. This climb is the best acclimatisation you can do before heading for Tserko Ri or crossing toward Gosaikunda.

Questions

How hard is Kyanjin Ri?

It is a short but steep hike: about 700 m of ascent from Kyanjin Gompa to the lower summit at roughly 4,600 m, taking 2 to 3 hours up and 1 to 1.5 hours down. No climbing skills are needed, but the altitude makes it tiring. Go slowly, carry water and warm layers, and turn back if you feel unwell.

What is the difference between Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri?

Kyanjin Ri is the shorter hike from the village, about 4,600 m at its lower summit and 4 to 5 hours return. Tserko Ri is higher, around 4,980 m, and takes 7 to 9 hours return. Tserko Ri has wider views but needs good acclimatisation, fitness and settled weather. Most trekkers do Kyanjin Ri.

When is the best time of day to climb Kyanjin Ri?

At dawn. In autumn and spring, cloud often builds over the peaks by mid-morning, and the wind picks up. Leave at about 5 to 5.30 am to reach the top for sunrise or soon after. Temperatures at the top can be minus 10 °C before the sun, so bring gloves, a hat and a down jacket.
