Tharepati is a small group of lodges on a ridge at about 3,650 m, where the Helambu trail meets the route from Gosaikunda over Lauribina La. It is the coldest and highest night of the standard Helambu trek, and the best for mountain views.

Before dawn, climb a few minutes above the lodges to a rise with prayer flags. As the sky lightens you see the Langtang peaks to the north, Jugal Himal and Dorje Lakpa to the north-east, and the long ridges running toward Gosaikunda. On clear days, views stretch far to the east.

Come back for hot tea and porridge before the descent toward Melamchi Ghyang. In spring, rhododendrons bloom in red and pink on the slopes below Tharepati, and the forest is noisy with birds.

Questions

How high is Tharepati?

About 3,650 m, the highest point of the standard Helambu trek. Some trekkers feel mild altitude effects here, such as a light headache or poor sleep. Walk at an easy pace, drink plenty of water, and descend if symptoms get worse. Most people sleep comfortably after the first hour.

Which mountains are visible from Tharepati?

On clear mornings you can see the Langtang range to the north, Jugal Himal and Dorje Lakpa to the north-east, and the ridges toward Gosaikunda. Views are clearest from October to December. In spring haze often builds by mid-morning, and in the monsoon cloud usually hides the peaks.

Is Tharepati cold?

Yes. From November to March, nights drop to around minus 5 °C or lower, and snow is possible in winter. In October and April it is milder but still near freezing. Lodges have quilts and a stove in the dining room; bring a warm sleeping bag and down jacket.
