Apple harvest walk around Sermathang
In autumn, walk through Hyolmo orchards around Sermathang and Tarkeghyang during the apple harvest, taste fruit straight from the tree and see how families sort, store and sell their crop.

Helambu's apples are small, crisp and sweet, grown on terraces between about 2,400 and 2,800 m. In September and October, families pick, sort and pack them for sale in Kathmandu, and every courtyard has baskets of fruit. Lodges serve apples fresh, in fritters, in pies, and occasionally as a home-distilled spirit.
We walk with a local guide through orchards near Sermathang, a Hyolmo village south of Tarkeghyang, stopping where farmers are working. You can help pick, learn which varieties keep best through winter, and hear how apples have become an important cash crop for the region.
The walk ends at a lodge or home for apple fritters and tea. It suits families and anyone who wants an easy half day in the middle of a trek, and it puts money into village hands through the fruit you buy.

Questions
When is apple season in Helambu?
Apples ripen from roughly September to October, depending on altitude and the year. October is ideal because the monsoon has ended, the trails are drier and the mountains clearer. Stored apples are still on sale into early winter in Helambu villages and Kathmandu.
Can I buy Helambu apples to take home?
Yes. Farmers and lodges sell apples by the kilo, and they keep well for a week or more. Most visitors carry a small bag back to Kathmandu. If you are flying internationally, check your destination country's rules on bringing fresh fruit, as many do not allow it.
Is the apple walk suitable for children?
Yes. The walk is short, on village paths with gentle slopes, and children usually enjoy picking fruit and meeting farm animals. Bring sun protection and water. If you are not trekking the whole loop, we can arrange a jeep to Sermathang or Tarkeghyang, depending on road conditions.
