Guru Rinpoche's caves with Tibetan pilgrims
A morning visiting the caves where Padmasambhava is said to have meditated: the Asura Cave on the hillside above Pharping and Yanglesho beside Shesh Narayan, with stops at monasteries and the Vajrayogini temple on the way. Walk with pilgrims and learn why this town matters to Tibetan Buddhists.
We start at the top of Pharping, where a stone stairway climbs past the Vajrayogini temple, an old Newar shrine to the tantric goddess, to the Asura Cave. The cave is small and now enclosed in a shrine room hung with offerings. Pilgrims bend low to enter, light butter lamps and touch a handprint in the rock said to be Guru Rinpoche's.
Around the cave, prayer flags cover the hillside and Tibetan pilgrims walk a kora past chortens and prayer wheels. We join them, then visit one of the monasteries below, where monks may be chanting. Your guide explains who Padmasambhava was and why the Vajrakilaya teachings are linked to this place.
Then we drive or walk down to Shesh Narayan, where a cliff shelters the Yanglesho cave, ponds with fish and Licchavi carvings of Vishnu. Buddhists and Hindus both worship here. We end beside the ponds, a calm place to sit before lunch in town or the drive back.

Questions
What is the Asura Cave in Pharping?
The Asura Cave is a small cave on the hillside above Pharping where Tibetan tradition says Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava, meditated in the 8th century. It is now enclosed in a shrine. Pilgrims enter to make offerings and touch a handprint in the rock. Visitors are welcome if they are quiet and respectful.
Can non-Buddhists visit Pharping's caves?
Yes. The caves and most monasteries welcome respectful visitors. Remove shoes before entering shrines, walk clockwise, do not touch offerings, and ask before photographing inside. The caves are small, so wait your turn if pilgrims are inside. Small donations are welcome.
How long do I need for the Pharping caves?
Two to three hours covers the Asura Cave, a monastery, the Vajrayogini temple and Shesh Narayan with Yanglesho. Add an hour for Dakshinkali and lunch. A full day lets you combine Pharping with Chobhar and Taudaha or the Champadevi hike.
