Indreshwar Mahadev and the triveni ghat
A guided walk from Indreshwar Mahadev, built in 1294, through Panauti's old lanes to the triveni ghat where the rivers meet. We read the temple's carved struts, visit riverside shrines and rest houses, and talk about the Makar Mela held every twelve years.

We begin at Indreshwar Mahadev in the town centre. The three-roofed temple stands in a courtyard with smaller shrines, and its carved roof struts show gods, goddesses and couples. Your guide explains the legend of Indra's penance, how the temple survived earthquakes, and how it is cared for by local guthis.
From the temple, we walk through brick lanes with carved windows and water spouts to the edge of town, where the Roshi and Punyamati rivers meet. Here, at the triveni ghat, stone steps lead down to the water, and small temples and rest houses line the bank. Cremations take place on the ghats, so we keep a respectful distance.
We look at the Brahmayani temple across the river and discuss the Makar Mela, held once every twelve years in the month of Magh, when pilgrims bathe here for a whole month. The walk ends in the old town square for tea and a plate of local snacks.

Questions
How old is Indreshwar Mahadev temple?
It was built in 1294, which makes it one of the oldest surviving temples in Nepal. It is a three-roofed pagoda dedicated to Shiva, with finely carved roof struts, and it survived the 2015 earthquake. It is still in daily use by local worshippers.
What is the triveni in Panauti?
Triveni means a confluence of three rivers. At Panauti, the Roshi and Punyamati rivers meet, and a third river, the Rudrawati, is believed to join them unseen. The ghats here are used for bathing, rituals and cremations, and host the Makar Mela every twelve years.
Is there an entry fee for Panauti?
Foreign visitors may be asked to pay a small heritage fee in the old town; homestay guests usually have it arranged. Fees support conservation. Rules change, so check current status before you travel and carry some rupees in cash.
