Hike from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha

A classic day hike from Dhulikhel through terraced farmland and forest to Namobuddha, where a stupa marks the place of the prince and the tigress, and a large monastery crowns the hill. About 3 to 4 hours each way, or continue on to Panauti.

We leave Dhulikhel early, walking south-east through the edges of town and out onto farm tracks. The path climbs and drops gently through terraced fields of rice and maize, small Tamang and Brahmin-Chhetri villages and patches of forest, with the Himalaya behind us on clear mornings.

After about 3 to 4 hours we reach Namobuddha, around 1,750 m. A white stupa marks the place where, in the Jataka tale, Prince Mahasattva gave his body to a starving tigress. A short climb leads to a stone carving of the scene and to the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery on the hilltop, with its prayer halls, monks and wide views.

We have lunch at a simple restaurant or monastery canteen, then either return to Dhulikhel by car, walk back, or continue downhill for 2 to 3 hours to Panauti for a homestay night. The hike suits walkers of average fitness; the trail has some steep but not technical sections.

Questions

How long is the hike from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha?

About 3 to 4 hours one way, roughly 10 to 12 km on farm tracks, village paths and forest trails. Many walkers return by car, or continue 2 to 3 hours downhill to Panauti, making a 6 to 7 hour day. It is moderate, with no high altitude.

What is Namobuddha?

Namobuddha is a Buddhist pilgrimage site in the hills south-east of Dhulikhel. It marks the place where, in a Jataka story, Prince Mahasattva, an earlier life of the Buddha, gave his body to a starving tigress and her cubs. It has a stupa, a stone carving of the story and a large monastery.

Can I stay overnight at Namobuddha?

Yes. The monastery has a guesthouse, and there are small lodges nearby. Staying overnight lets you hear early morning prayers and see sunrise over the hills. Book ahead, especially in peak season. Dress modestly and follow monastery rules.
