Sunrise from the Kali temple above Dhulikhel

Climb in the dark from the old town to the small Kali temple on the hill above, and watch the Himalaya catch first light from Langtang to Gaurishankar. Locals come here for morning worship and exercise. Back in time for breakfast.

We start about 45 minutes before sunrise, walking up from the old town with torches. The path climbs steadily for 20 to 30 minutes, passing houses and small fields, to a hilltop crowned by a modest temple to the goddess Kali. Locals come up too, some to pray, some to exercise.

From the top, the view opens in every direction: the town below, the valleys of Kavre filled with mist, and to the north the long white line of the Himalaya. As the sky lightens, the peaks turn pink and then gold, from the Langtang range across to Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar and beyond.

We stay until the light flattens, enjoying tea from a flask, then walk down by the same path or a loop through a different part of the old town. Breakfast waits at the hotel. If the morning is cloudy, sunset from the same spot is a good second chance.

Questions

Which mountains can you see from Dhulikhel?

On clear days, a long stretch of the Himalaya from the Langtang range across Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar and the Rolwaling peaks, and sometimes further east. October to February mornings give the best chance. Haze builds from March and monsoon cloud hides the peaks from June to September.

Is Dhulikhel better than Nagarkot for views?

Both have excellent views of the same part of the Himalaya. Nagarkot is higher and its views slightly wider; Dhulikhel is a real town with an old core, a little warmer, and a base for Namobuddha. Weather on the day matters more than which you choose.

Do I need a guide for the Kali temple sunrise walk?

Not necessarily. The path is short and used by locals, but it is dark at the start, so a guide or hotel staff member helps the first time. Carry a torch, wear good shoes and a warm layer, and leave about 45 minutes before sunrise.
