Rhododendron forest trails in spring

In spring, follow forest trails between Ramaroshan's lakes and meadows when the rhododendrons are in full flower, red and pink under the oak and pine, with danphe calling from the slopes.

Rhododendron is Nepal's national flower, and Ramaroshan's forests are thick with it. From late March into April the trees burst into red and pink flowers, and the trails between lakes and meadows become tunnels of colour. Fallen petals carpet the path.

A guided loop links several lakes and patans through the flowering forest. Along the way listen for the danphe, whose iridescent males are hard to see but easy to hear, and watch for langur monkeys in the canopy. Musk deer and black bear live here but are rarely seen.

Choose a half-day or full-day loop depending on your energy. Carry water, lunch and a rain jacket; spring afternoons can bring showers. Keep to the trails, do not pick flowers, and go with a guide who knows the network of paths.

Questions

When do the rhododendrons bloom at Ramaroshan?

Usually from late March to April, varying a little each year with altitude and weather. The peak is often in early to mid April. Lower slopes flower first, higher ones later, so you can follow the bloom upwards.

Can I see the danphe at Ramaroshan?

Danphe, the Himalayan monal and Nepal's national bird, lives in Ramaroshan's forests. You are more likely to hear its whistling call at dawn and dusk than to see it. Walk quietly with a guide along the forest edges in the early morning for the best chance.

Do I need a guide for the forest trails?

Yes, we recommend one. The trails branch through dense forest and are poorly signed, and a local guide also knows where herders and wildlife are. Ramaroshan is outside national parks, but a guide makes the walk safer and more interesting.
