Morning walk around Jigale lake

Walk the shore of Jigale, the largest of Ramaroshan's twelve lakes and shaped like the letter Y, in the still light of early morning, when the forest reflects in the water and danphe call from the trees.

Jigale is the centrepiece of Ramaroshan. Its two arms spread through the forest in the shape of a Y, so that from different points on the shore it looks like separate lakes. A trail circles much of it, through rhododendron, oak and pine and across patches of open grass.

Early morning is the best time. Mist lifts off the water, the surface is still enough to mirror the trees, and birds are active along the edges. You may hear the loud whistling call of the danphe from the forest above and see ducks or herons on the water outside the cold months.

The walk is easy and suits most ages. Boating began on Ramaroshan's lakes in 2020; ask locally whether boats are running and what they cost. Bring a warm layer for the early start, and binoculars if you have them.
