Trek up to the plateau from Bajhang or Doti
Climb from the villages of Bajhang or Doti through terraces, oak and rhododendron forest to the Khaptad plateau, a long day of ascent that earns you the meadows above.

There is no road onto the Khaptad plateau, so every visit begins with a climb. From Bajhang, jeeps reach Meltadi in Khaptad Chhanna rural municipality in about two hours from Chainpur, and the walk up takes about four hours. From Doti, the long-used route climbs from the Jhingrana side. Other trails come up from Achham and Bajura.
The trail climbs steadily through terraced villages, where people grow rice, wheat and millet, then into oak and rhododendron forest, with occasional teahouses and water points. As you gain height the trees thin, the air cools, and you come out onto the first open meadow with the plateau spread before you.
Start early to avoid afternoon cloud and rain. Porters and a camp crew are needed for most trips, since there is little food or shelter on top. A licensed guide is required, and your agency will arrange permits, transport and supplies in advance.

Questions
Which is the best route to Khaptad?
From Bajhang, a drive from Chainpur to Meltadi and a walk of about four hours is one of the shortest. From Doti, the route via Jhingrana is long established. Routes from Achham and Bajura are longer. Your agency will choose based on road conditions, flights and your onward plans.
How fit do I need to be for Khaptad?
You need to manage a climb of four to eight hours with a daypack, depending on the route, at a steady pace up to about 3,000 m. On the plateau walking is gentle. Anyone who has done a few full-day hill walks will cope with a sensible pace.
Do I need porters for Khaptad?
For most foreign visitors, yes. There is only one basic lodge on the plateau and little food to buy, so a camping trek with porters and a cook is usual. Porters also make the long climb much easier. Book through a licensed agency.
