Sunrise on Everest from Namche's park hill
Climb 20–30 minutes from Namche to the Sagarmatha National Park headquarters at Mendalphu for sunrise, when Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku catch the first light. The visitor centre beside it explains the park, its wildlife and Sherpa life.

From inside Namche's bowl you see Kongde Ri and Thamserku, but not Everest. For that you climb the stepped path at the east side of town, past the last lodges and an army post, to the grassy ridge at Mendalphu where the park headquarters stands. On a clear morning the view runs up the valley: Everest's dark summit pyramid above the long Nuptse–Lhotse wall, Ama Dablam's sharp ridge to the right, and Thamserku close across the gorge.
Go at dawn. In October, November and December the sky is often clear early, and sunrise lights the summits gold while the valleys stay in shadow. Bring a thermos of tea and a down jacket, because frost is normal. Himalayan tahr, the shaggy wild goats, graze on the slopes below, and you may hear or see Himalayan monal, Nepal's national bird, in the scrub.
After breakfast, return to look around the visitor centre, which has displays on the park's creation in 1976, its UNESCO listing in 1979, Sherpa culture and the wildlife of Khumbu. Nearby small private museums show a traditional Sherpa house and mountaineering photographs. The walk up and back counts as a short acclimatisation outing before a bigger hike later in the day.

Questions
Can you see Everest from Namche Bazaar?
Not from the town itself, which sits in a bowl facing west. A 20–30 minute climb to the Sagarmatha National Park headquarters on the ridge above town gives a clear view of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku on clear mornings. Syangboche and Hotel Everest View, higher up, give an even fuller view.
What time is sunrise in Namche?
Between about 5:30 and 6:30 am depending on the season: earlier in spring, later in November and December. Leave your lodge 30–40 minutes before to reach the park hill in time. Clear mornings are most likely from October to December. In monsoon months, June to September, cloud usually hides the peaks.
What wildlife can I see near Namche?
Himalayan tahr, a large wild goat, is often seen on slopes around the park headquarters and on the trail towards Tengboche. Himalayan monal, the iridescent national bird of Nepal, lives in the scrub and forest. Musk deer occur in the forests nearby, and snow leopards live in the park but are very rarely seen.
