Tea on the Hotel Everest View terrace

Walk 30 minutes up from Khumjung to the Hotel Everest View at about 3,880 m and drink tea on its terrace facing Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. It is the most famous view in lower Khumbu and an easy acclimatisation outing.

Hotel Everest View was built in the 1970s by the Japanese hotelier Takashi Miyahara on a ridge above Syangboche, designed low and stone-faced so it would not stand out on the skyline. It reached its fiftieth year in 2025. For most visitors, though, it is not a hotel but a terrace: a long stone platform with tables, facing up the valley towards the highest mountains on earth.

On a clear morning the view runs from Thamserku and Kangtega on the right, across Ama Dablam's spire, to Everest's summit rising behind the Nuptse–Lhotse wall, with Tengboche's ridge in the middle distance. Tea and coffee are served, and so is a simple lunch. Sit for half an hour; it is one of the best places in Khumbu to understand the shape of the valleys ahead.

From Khumjung the walk up takes 30–40 minutes through juniper and rhododendron, climbing about 100 m. Many people combine it with the loop from Namche via Syangboche. The air at about 3,880 m is thin, so walk slowly and do not plan to sleep here until you have spent two nights in Namche. Mornings are clearest; cloud often rises by late morning.

Questions

Do I need to be a guest to visit Hotel Everest View?

No. The terrace and restaurant welcome walkers for tea, coffee and simple meals, and most visitors come as day hikers from Namche or Khumjung. Prices are higher than in teahouses, reflecting the location and supply costs. Buying a drink is the courteous way to enjoy the view; groups should keep noise down for staying guests.

How far is Hotel Everest View from Khumjung?

About 30–40 minutes on foot, climbing roughly 100 m through juniper and rhododendron above the village. From Namche it is about 1.5–2 hours via the Syangboche airstrip. Many walkers do a loop: Namche, Syangboche, the hotel, Khumjung, Kunde and back to Namche in five or six hours.

What mountains can I see from Hotel Everest View?

On a clear day: Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse straight up the valley, Ama Dablam's sharp spire, Thamserku and Kangtega to the right, and Taboche to the left, with Tengboche monastery's ridge below. Mornings from October to December give the most reliable views. Spring brings more haze and afternoon cloud.
