Jeep to the ridge with a homestay night

The short version for travellers with less time: a long jeep day from Ilam up to the ridge villages, a night in a homestay near the top, sunrise on the four great peaks, and the drive back down.

We leave Ilam early and drive north past Mai Pokhari, then on unpaved tracks up through ridge villages and forest. The drive is long, roughly 6–8 hours with stops, and bumpy in places, with steep sections where passengers sometimes walk while the jeep climbs. Our drivers know the road and the weather, and we stop for tea and lunch in the villages, with time to stretch and take photographs.

The night is in a homestay close to the ridge. Dinner is hot and simple, and the family keeps a fire going in the kitchen, the warmest room in the house. Conversation turns to cattle, potatoes, cardamom and the changes the jeep road has brought. Before dawn we walk up to the viewpoint for sunrise on Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse and Everest, with tea in a flask.

After breakfast we drive back to Ilam, arriving by late afternoon. Because the altitude gain is fast, from about 1,300 m to over 3,000 m in a day, we watch for headaches and keep a lower-altitude fallback plan. If anyone feels unwell, we sleep lower and go up for sunrise the next morning instead. A spare day in the plan makes the whole trip calmer.

Questions

Can I drive to Sandakpur from Ilam?

Jeep tracks now climb from the Ilam side toward the Sandakpur area, but the road is long, rough and partly unpaved, and can close in the monsoon. Only 4WD vehicles with local drivers should attempt it. Check current status before you travel.

Is altitude sickness a risk at Sandakpur?

At 3,636 m, mild symptoms such as headache and poor sleep are common, especially when you drive up fast. Serious altitude sickness is less common at this height but possible. Drink water, avoid alcohol the first night and tell your guide if you feel unwell.

Is the Sandakpur jeep trip suitable for children?

Older children who cope well with long, bumpy drives usually enjoy it. The cold night and fast altitude gain are the main concerns. We advise against it for very young children and anyone with heart or lung conditions without medical advice.
