Moraine ridge viewpoint above Pang Pema
For strong, well-acclimatised walkers, a short climb up the slopes above Pang Pema for a wider view of Kanchenjunga's north face, the glacier and the peaks along the Tibetan border, on clear mornings only.
From the base camp shelf, a rough path climbs the grassy and rocky slopes to the north. Gaining even 100–200 m opens the view: the full north face of Kanchenjunga, the long glacier curving below it, and the peaks around the head of the valley toward the Tibetan border. The ground is steep and loose in places, and every step at this height takes effort, so we go slowly and stop often to breathe.
We only go up if everyone feels well, the weather is settled and there is time to get back to Lhonak before afternoon cloud and wind. Our guide decides on the spot, and turning back is always an option. Anyone who prefers to stay at the base camp shelf can rest with a member of the team while the others climb. There is no shame in either choice; the view from the shelf is already extraordinary.
It is the best photography spot of the trek, with the whole face and glacier in one frame. Bring a wide lens and keep batteries warm inside your jacket, as cold drains them fast. Gloves thin enough to work a camera help. We spend about twenty minutes at the high point, then descend carefully to the shelf and start the walk back to Lhonak, keeping an eye on the sky.

Questions
Is the viewpoint above Pang Pema dangerous?
It is not technical, but it is steep, rocky and high, above 5,200 m. The risks are altitude, cold and slips. We only go up with fit, acclimatised walkers in good weather, and our guide can call it off at any time.
What peaks can I see from Pang Pema?
Kanchenjunga's north face dominates the view, with its long ridges and hanging glaciers. Around the head of the glacier are other high peaks of the massif and the Tibetan border ridge. Your guide will name them on the day.
What time of day is best for photographs at Pang Pema?
Mid to late morning, when the sun lights the face from the side and before cloud builds. Afternoons often bring wind and cloud. In autumn the morning light is usually clear and sharp, while spring mornings can be softer and hazier.
