Sunrise walk on the Hile ridge
An early walk from the bazaar up to a viewpoint on the ridge above Hile, to watch the sun rise over the folded hills of the Koshi basin and, on the clearest mornings, snow peaks to the north.

We leave the lodge in the dark with torches and walk uphill on paths and steps above the bazaar, past houses where the first kitchen fires are being lit. In 30–40 minutes we reach a viewpoint on the ridge, where the land drops away on both sides. It is cold and often windy, so we find a sheltered spot and wait with tea from a flask as the eastern sky turns from grey to orange.
As the light comes, the ridges of Dhankuta, Tehrathum and Sankhuwasabha appear in layers, often with mist filling the valleys below like a white lake. On the clearest winter mornings, snow peaks show on the northern horizon. Our guide names the villages and valleys you can see, the roads leading north to Basantapur and Khandbari, and the tea gardens on the slopes nearby.
We stay until the sun is well up and the mist starts to lift, then walk back down for breakfast and tea in the bazaar as the town wakes up, buses warm their engines and shops open. It is a short outing, about an hour and a half in all, and leaves the day free for a tea garden visit, the drive to Basantapur or the onward road north or south.

Questions
Can you see the Himalaya from Hile?
On clear mornings, mostly from October to February, snow peaks are visible on the northern horizon from the ridges above Hile. In spring and the monsoon, haze and cloud usually hide them. The views over the hills are fine in any season.
How cold is Hile at sunrise?
In winter, dawn temperatures at about 1,948 m can be near freezing, and the ridge is often windy, which makes it feel colder. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves from November to February, and a layer even in spring and autumn.
Is the sunrise walk steep?
It is a short but steep climb of 30–40 minutes on paths and steps, some uneven. Go slowly and use a torch in the dark. It is suitable for most reasonably fit travellers, and our guide sets an easy pace.
