The flight drops you on the hot plains at Bhairahawa. Within an hour of driving north the Siddhartha Highway starts to wind up through sal forest, the air cools, and the Chure hills give way to the Mahabharat range. Tansen appears as a cluster of tin and tile roofs on a slope. Here the people are Newar traders and craftspeople in the bazaar and Magar farmers in the villages around, and the town has the feel of a place that was once a capital and still remembers it: a big palace gate, temples built by generals, a weekly rhythm of market and puja. On the third day you go down to the Kali Gandaki, where a white palace stands above the river.

Tansen is the town most travellers drive through on the way between Lumbini and Pokhara. It deserves better. The bazaar climbs the south face of Shreenagar Danda in stone-paved lanes too steep for cars, past wooden-windowed Newar houses, small shrines and the workshops that made Palpa's name: the handlooms that weave dhaka cloth for the Nepali topi, and the foundries that cast the bronze karuwa water jug. In the morning the Himalaya shows from the ridge above town, Dhaulagiri to the Annapurnas.

Palpa was an independent hill kingdom under the Sen kings until the Gorkhali armies took it in 1806, and later a posting for Rana governors, some of them sent here to keep them away from Kathmandu. One of them, Khadga Shumsher, built Rani Mahal, a palace on the Kali Gandaki in memory of his wife. We base you at Hotel Srinagar on the ridge and give you time to walk.

Highlights

  • The three-tiered Amar Narayan temple, built in 1806 by the Gorkhali commander Amar Singh Thapa
  • Baggi Dhoka, the great gate of the Tansen Durbar palace compound
  • Dhaka handloom workshops and the metalworkers who make the Palpali karuwa
  • Sunrise from the pine ridge of Shreenagar Danda over Dhaulagiri and the Annapurnas
  • Rani Mahal, the Rana-era palace on the Kali Gandaki often called Nepal's Taj Mahal

Drive to Bhairahawa, fly to Kathmandu

Night: Kathmandu≈ 65 km · 2.5 h drive · then ≈ 35 min flightBreakfast

Catch the sunrise from the ridge if the sky is clear, then drive down to Bhairahawa for the flight to Kathmandu. If you have more time, this is the point to add Lumbini: it is only 22 km from the airport, and two nights there join naturally to this trip. You can also continue by road north to Pokhara instead of flying; ask us when you book. The drive down is the reverse of your first day, through pine and sal forest and the gorge of the Tinau river at Butwal.

Questions

About this trip

Where is Tansen?

Tansen is the headquarters of Palpa district in Lumbini Province, on the Siddhartha Highway between Butwal and Pokhara. It sits at about 1,350 m on the slope of Shreenagar Danda, around 40 km north of Butwal and 65 km from Bhairahawa airport. It was once the capital of the independent Palpa kingdom.

What is Tansen famous for?

Tansen is known for dhaka, the patterned handloom cloth used for the Nepali topi cap, and for the Palpali karuwa, a heavy bronze water jug. It also has the Amar Narayan temple of 1806, the Tansen Durbar palace and its great gate, cool weather compared with the plains, and a ridge with Himalayan views.

What is Rani Mahal?

Rani Mahal is a palace on the Kali Gandaki built in the 1890s by Khadga Shumsher Rana, then governor of Palpa, in memory of his wife Tej Kumari. Because it was built for love and grief, Nepalis call it the Taj Mahal of Nepal. It has been under restoration in recent years; check current status before you travel.

How many days do I need in Tansen?

Two nights is enough for the bazaar, temples, workshops and the ridge. Three nights lets you add Rani Mahal without rushing, which is what this trip does. If you are passing between Lumbini and Pokhara, even one night breaks the long drive and gives you an evening and a morning in town.

Can I buy dhaka cloth in Tansen?

Yes. Shops in the bazaar sell dhaka by the metre, as topi caps, shawls and scarves. Prices depend on fineness and whether the cloth is hand-woven or machine-made, so ask to see the loom. A hand-woven topi typically costs a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees; shawls cost more.

Is Tansen good for families?

Yes, if your children can manage hills. The bazaar lanes are steep stone steps, and that walking is the main activity. Children enjoy the workshops, the big gate and the ridge walks. Hotel Srinagar has gardens and space. Rani Mahal is a long day, so with young children we may shorten it.

What is the weather like in Tansen?

At about 1,350 m Tansen is much cooler than Lumbini. Winter days are mild and clear with cold mornings, spring is warm, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and cloud. October to April is best. In winter, morning fog often fills the valleys below the town while Tansen stays in sunshine.

Can I combine Tansen with Lumbini or Pokhara?

Easily. Tansen sits between them on the Siddhartha Highway: about 2.5–3 hours by road from Lumbini and 5–6 hours from Pokhara. Our six-night Lumbini, Tansen and Pokhara journey does exactly this. Add Lumbini to this trip with two extra nights before you fly back from Bhairahawa.

Do I need a guide in Tansen?

You do not need a permit or a guide to visit Tansen. We include one because the town's history and workshops are hard to find on your own, and a local guide opens doors to weavers and metalworkers who do not have signboards. The guide also handles the Rani Mahal road, which changes with the seasons.
