You leave Kathmandu down the Trishuli river and at Kurintar swing up in a cable car to Manakamana, the wish-fulfilling goddess, where families queue with offerings. Then up a side valley to Gorkha, a small hill town with a palace above it. Climbing to the Gorkha Durbar at dusk you see why this ridge mattered: the view takes in the Himalaya from Manaslu to the Annapurnas, and the valleys below. Here Prithvi Narayan Shah was born in 1723, and from here his armies marched east. The next stop is Bandipur, settled by Newar traders from Bhaktapur, its main street lined with three-storey houses of brick and carved wood. When the Prithvi Highway took the trade to the valley floor in the 1970s, Bandipur emptied, then slowly came back. Then Pokhara, and the lake.

Most travellers do Kathmandu to Pokhara in one long drive or a 25-minute flight. This journey takes six nights over it and stops at the two places that explain how Nepal came to be. Gorkha is the hill town whose king, Prithvi Narayan Shah, began the conquest of the Kathmandu Valley in the 1740s. Bandipur is the Newar trading town that grew rich on the mule route between India and Tibet and was then left behind by the highway, which is why it survived.

Driving distances are short, between 2 and 5 hours a day, with time to walk. Nights are in a simple hotel in Gorkha, the restored Newar house of The Old Inn in Bandipur, and Hotel Barahi in Pokhara's Lakeside. The journey ends in Pokhara, so it links easily to a trek or to Chitwan. Your guide stays with you from Kathmandu to Pokhara, so the stories carry from one town to the next.

Breakfast

The trip ends after breakfast with a transfer to Pokhara airport for a flight to Kathmandu, or onward to a trek or Chitwan. Questions

About this trip

Is Bandipur worth visiting?

Yes, especially for travellers interested in old Nepal. Bandipur is a Newar trading town on a ridge between Kathmandu and Pokhara, with a car-free bazaar of brick and wooden houses, temples, a large cave and views of the Himalaya. Two nights give time for sunrise, a village walk and a slow evening in the square.

How do I get from Kathmandu to Bandipur?

Drive west on the Prithvi Highway to Dumre, about 140 km and 4 to 5 hours, then take the 8 km side road up to Bandipur, about 20 minutes. Tourist buses to Pokhara stop at Dumre, where local jeeps go up the hill. From Bandipur, Pokhara is about 75 km, or 2.5 hours.

Why is Gorkha important in Nepal's history?

Gorkha was the hill kingdom of the Shah dynasty. Prithvi Narayan Shah, born here in 1723, became king in 1743 and began the campaign that united the Kathmandu Valley and many hill states into the Kingdom of Nepal, conquering Kathmandu in 1768. The word Gurkha, used for Nepali soldiers in the British and Indian armies, comes from Gorkha.

Can non-Hindus enter Gorkha Durbar?

Yes, the palace complex and courtyards are open to all visitors, but the inner shrine of the Kalika temple is closed to non-Hindus, and some rooms are entered only by priests. Visitors remove shoes in temple areas, and leather items may need to be left outside. Photography is restricted in parts of the complex.

What is the Manakamana cable car?

It is a cable car from Kurintar on the Prithvi Highway to the hilltop temple of Manakamana, about 10 minutes and 2.8 km long, opened in 1998. Before it was built, pilgrims walked up a steep trail for several hours. The temple honours a form of the goddess Bhagwati, believed to grant wishes.

What is The Old Inn in Bandipur like?

The Old Inn is a restored traditional Newar house in Bandipur's main bazaar, with wooden windows, simple but comfortable rooms and a terrace facing the Himalaya. It is one of the original guesthouses that helped revive the town. Rooms are characterful rather than luxurious, and some bathrooms are compact.

What is Siddha Gufa?

Siddha Gufa is a large limestone cave below Bandipur, often described as one of the largest caves in Nepal, with stalactites, stalagmites and big chambers. It is reached by a steep forest trail of about 1.5 hours down from the town, or about 45 minutes up from the highway at Bimalnagar. A local guide with lights is needed inside.

When is the best time for this trip?

October to December gives clear mountain views from Gorkha, Bandipur and Sarangkot. March and April are warm and hazier, with rhododendrons on the ridges. January and February are cold at night in Bandipur but clear. Monsoon, June to September, brings rain and landslides on the roads, and the mountains are rarely visible.

How much does the Gorkha–Bandipur–Pokhara trip cost?

Our 6-night trip starts from USD 950 per person, twin sharing, including a private car and guide throughout, a night in Gorkha, two nights at The Old Inn, three nights at Hotel Barahi, and the main entry fees. The flight from Pokhara back to Kathmandu adds about USD 100–130 per person.
