The Famous Farm
A restored Newar farmhouse on the ridge at Nuwakot, a short walk from the seven-storey palace. Rooms keep the low ceilings and carved wood of the old house, and meals come from the garden. We use it for a quiet first or last night outside Kathmandu.

The Famous Farm is a house of roughly 150 years in the old bazaar of Nuwakot, restored and opened to guests in 2006. The name comes from the builders who worked on the restoration and told the owners that one day the farm would be famous. The buildings sit around a stone-paved courtyard and gardens, and the rooms are simple: timber floors, small carved windows, thick walls that keep the summer heat out. Do not expect a pool, a spa or room service menus. Expect a kitchen that cooks to order with vegetables grown on the property.
The view is the reason most people stay. From the terraces you look down on the Trishuli valley and across to the brick tower of Nuwakot Durbar, which is close enough to walk to before breakfast. Evenings are slow here: dal bhat in the courtyard, the bells of the Bhairavi temple, dogs barking in the lanes. It suits travellers who want history and village life without trekking, and it makes a gentle stop before or after a Langtang trek or the drive to Syabrubesi.
Why we use it
- Walk to Nuwakot Durbar and the Bhairavi temple in minutes
- Old Newar house with carved windows and courtyard meals
- Garden produce on the table and a quiet ridge-top setting
Questions
How far is The Famous Farm from Kathmandu?
It is in Nuwakot village, about 75 km north-west of Kathmandu by road via Kakani and Bidur (Trishuli Bazaar). Plan on 3 to 3.5 hours by private car, more after rain. Bidur and the Trishuli valley floor were hit by the flood of 26 August 2026, so road works and detours are likely; check current status before you travel. The farm itself sits high on the ridge, well above the river.
Is The Famous Farm suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes, with some care. The buildings are old, so expect steps, low door frames and uneven stone paving in the courtyard and lanes. There are no lifts. Families with young children enjoy the gardens and the short walk to the palace, and older guests who are steady on stairs manage well. Tell us about mobility needs and we will ask for ground-level rooms where possible.
What do guests eat at The Famous Farm?
Meals are Nepali home cooking prepared by the resident cooks, using vegetables and herbs from the farm garden where the season allows. Dal bhat with seasonal greens, pickles and curried vegetables is the core of dinner, with simple breakfasts of eggs, bread, porridge and fruit. Tell us in advance about vegetarian, vegan or allergy needs, since the kitchen buys from Nuwakot and Bidur markets.
