Kathmandu Guest House
One of the first guesthouses in Thamel, opened in the late 1960s, and the place many say started the area's tourist quarter. Rooms range from simple to comfortable round a garden courtyard in the heart of Thamel, walkable to Asan and the Durbar Square.

Kathmandu Guest House opened in the late 1960s, when Thamel was still a quiet neighbourhood of houses and fields, and it became a base for overland travellers, trekkers and climbers. The rest of Thamel's hotels, restaurants and trekking shops grew up around it. The property was damaged in the 2015 earthquake and has since been repaired and reopened.
Today it offers rooms at several levels of comfort, from simple to deluxe, set round a garden courtyard with tables and trees, a calm spot in Thamel's lanes. The location is its strength: you can walk to Asan and Indra Chowk in 15 minutes and to the Durbar Square in 25, and trekking agencies and gear shops are on the doorstep.
Why we use it

Questions
Is Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel?
Yes, it is in the heart of Thamel, Kathmandu's main tourist district. Restaurants, trekking agencies and gear shops are steps away. Asan and Indra Chowk are about 15 minutes' walk and Kathmandu Durbar Square about 25 minutes. The airport is 20 to 40 minutes by car.
Is Kathmandu Guest House noisy?
Thamel can be loud in the evenings, but the guest house sits back from the street round a garden courtyard, which helps. Rooms facing the garden or higher floors are usually quieter. Ask for a courtyard-facing room when you book if you are a light sleeper.
Was Kathmandu Guest House damaged in the 2015 earthquake?
Yes. The property was damaged in 2015 and has since been repaired, and the hotel has been operating fully since. The garden and courtyard remain at the centre of the property, as they have been since its early days.
