Tansen to Rani Mahal
Rani Mahal lies on the Kali Gandaki below Tansen. The usual way is a 1–2 hour jeep ride on a partly rough road; the alternative is to drive 13 km to Kailash Nagar near Batase Danda and walk down 2–3 hours through forest and villages.
A private jeep from Tansen takes the road down towards the Kali Gandaki and Rani Mahal. Parts are steep, narrow and rough, and conditions change with the season and roadworks, so the time varies. A local driver who knows the road is essential. After heavy rain sections may close, so check current status before you travel.
Drive about 13 km from Tansen to Kailash Nagar near Batase Danda, then follow the walking trail down through Magar villages and the Rani Ban forest to the palace, about 2–3 hours. Arrange for the jeep to meet you at Rani Mahal for the return, to avoid the long climb back up.

By jeep, about 1–2 hours each way depending on road conditions. If you drive to Kailash Nagar near Batase Danda and hike down, allow 3–4 hours to reach the palace. A full visit from Tansen, including time at the palace and river, takes most of a day.
Can I walk from Tansen to Rani Mahal?
Yes, partly. A walking trail leads down to Rani Mahal from Kailash Nagar near Batase Danda, about 13 km by road from Tansen. The descent takes 2–3 hours. Walking all the way from Tansen is possible with a guide but long, and the return climb is hard, so most walkers use a jeep back.
Is the road to Rani Mahal safe?
With an experienced local driver and a suitable jeep, yes, in the dry season. The road is narrow and steep in places, and landslides can affect it from June to September. Do not attempt it in a small car, and check current status before you travel, especially after rain.
Can I visit Rani Mahal from Pokhara or Lumbini?
Not comfortably in a day. Rani Mahal is best reached from Tansen, which is about 3 hours from Lumbini and 5–6 hours from Pokhara. Plan at least two nights in Tansen to see the town and make the Rani Mahal trip without rushing.
