Private car · 5–6 h

The Siddhartha Highway runs south from Pokhara through Syangja and Waling, winding along ridges and valleys, then drops to cross the Kali Gandaki at Ramdi before climbing to Tansen. The road is narrow and has many curves, with occasional landslides in the monsoon. A private car lets you stop for views and lunch. Check current status before you travel.

Local bus · 6–7 h

Buses for Butwal and Bhairahawa leave Pokhara through the morning and pass Tansen; ask to be dropped at the Tansen bus park. They stop often and can be crowded, but they are cheap and give a real picture of hill travel. Keep luggage light.

Local tip

Leave Pokhara early to reach Tansen in time for sunset from Srinagar Danda.

Questions

How far is Tansen from Pokhara?

Tansen is about 125 km south of Pokhara on the Siddhartha Highway. The drive takes 5–6 hours by private car and 6–7 hours by local bus, depending on traffic, road works and stops. The road is winding, so allow extra time and take motion-sickness tablets if needed.

Is there a tourist bus from Pokhara to Tansen?

Tourist buses from Pokhara mostly run to Kathmandu, Chitwan and Lumbini rather than Tansen. Local buses towards Butwal stop at Tansen. A private car is the most comfortable option, especially if you want to stop at Ramdi or continue to Lumbini the next day.

What is there to see on the road from Pokhara to Tansen?

The road passes through the hill towns of Syangja and Waling, terraced farmland, orange and coffee country, and crosses the Kali Gandaki at Ramdi, known for its riverside fried fish stalls. On clear mornings the Annapurna range is visible behind you as you leave Pokhara.

Can I go from Pokhara to Lumbini in one day?

Yes, it is about 210 km and 7–8 hours by car via Tansen and Butwal. But a night in Tansen breaks the drive into two halves of 5–6 and 3 hours and adds one of Nepal's best-preserved hill towns, so we usually recommend stopping.
