Kathmandu to Phaplu
Phaplu, in the Solu hills, is reached by a short flight from Kathmandu or by jeep in about 10–12 hours over roughly 260 km of highway and hill road via Okhaldhunga. It is the gateway for Junbesi, Chiwong and walking routes into Khumbu.
Small aircraft fly from Kathmandu's domestic terminal to Phaplu's airstrip at about 2,413 m. Services are fewer than to Lukla and schedules change by season and airline, sometimes running only a few days a week. Like Lukla, flights depend on clear morning weather. When they run, this is the quickest way into Solu, so check current status before you travel.
Shared and private jeeps run from Kathmandu east through Dhulikhel and down the Sindhuli highway, then climb north via Ghurmi and Okhaldhunga to Salleri, the Solukhumbu district headquarters, and on to Phaplu. The last stretch is narrow mountain road, rough after rain. Monsoon landslides can close it for days. Start early and break the journey if you prefer daylight driving.

Local tip
If you drive, plan your first night in Phaplu or Salleri rather than pushing on, because the road day is long.
Questions
How do I get from Kathmandu to Phaplu?
Fly or drive. Flights take about 30–35 minutes to Phaplu's airstrip but run less often than Lukla flights and depend on morning weather. Jeeps take 10–12 hours via Okhaldhunga and Salleri on roughly 260 km of highway and hill road. Both are affected by monsoon weather from June to September. Check current status before you travel.
Can I trek from Phaplu to Everest?
Yes. From Phaplu or Salleri you can walk north and east through Ringmo, the Taksindu La and Nunthala to join the main Everest trail below Lukla in about four to five days. It is a classic lower-hills approach through Sherpa and Rai villages, with gentler acclimatisation than flying straight to Lukla. Many walkers combine it with Junbesi.
Is the road to Phaplu safe?
It is a working mountain road used daily by jeeps and buses, with narrow sections and steep drops above Okhaldhunga. Dry-season travel, October to May, is reasonable with an experienced driver. In the monsoon, landslides and mud make it slow and sometimes blocked. We use private jeeps with drivers who know the road and avoid driving after dark.
What is there to see near Phaplu?
Chiwong Gompa on its cliff above the town, which stages its own Mani Rimdu, the district bazaar of Salleri a short walk away, and Ringmo's apple orchards and Junbesi's monasteries a day's walk north. The Pikey Peak viewpoint, at about 4,065 m, lies to the west for a short trek with long Himalayan views.
