Kathmandu to Lumbini
Kathmandu to Lumbini is about 280 km by road, 8–9 hours by private car via Mugling, Narayanghat and Butwal. The quicker way is a 35-minute flight to Bhairahawa followed by a 30–40 minute drive of about 18 km to Lumbini.
Several domestic airlines fly Kathmandu to Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha International Airport) daily, in about 35 minutes. From the airport a taxi or pre-booked car takes 30–40 minutes to Lumbini, about 18 km. Morning flights are most reliable; in December and January fog at Bhairahawa can delay them. Check current schedules before you travel.
The road leaves Kathmandu over the rim of the valley, drops to the Trishuli river and follows it to Mugling, then runs down to Narayanghat and west along the East-West Highway through Butwal to Bhairahawa and Lumbini. It is about 280 km. Traffic near Kathmandu and road works can add hours, so leave early. Check current status before you travel.
Tourist buses leave Kathmandu early in the morning for Bhairahawa, with stops for breakfast and lunch on the way. From Bhairahawa, local buses, taxis and e-rickshaws cover the last 22 km to Lumbini. It is the cheapest comfortable option, but a long day in the seat.
