Sunset above the clouds at Badal Danda
At Badal Danda, the cloud ridge at about 3,200 m, the evening often brings a sea of cloud filling the valleys below while the Annapurnas and Machhapuchhre catch the last light above. Sit on the ridge and watch it happen.

Badal means cloud, and the ridge earns its name. In the late afternoon, warm air rising from the valleys forms a layer of cloud that often settles below the ridge, so that you sit on a grassy crest above a white sea, with peaks floating on it. The effect is strongest in autumn and spring after clear days.
From Badal Danda the view runs along the ridge to Machhapuchhre, with Annapurna South and Hiunchuli to the left and Mardi Himal ahead. As the sun drops the snow goes gold, then pink, then grey, while the cloud below turns orange. Bring a warm layer: the temperature drops fast once the sun goes.
Some itineraries sleep at Badal Danda, others pass through between Low Camp and High Camp. If you are staying at Low Camp, walk up about an hour in the afternoon for sunset and return by headlamp with your guide. Stay on the main trail; the ridge sides are steep.

Questions
Where is Badal Danda on the Mardi Himal trek?
Badal Danda is a section of the ridge at about 3,200 m between Low Camp (about 2,970 m) and High Camp (about 3,580 m). It has a few lodges and open grassy slopes with wide views. Some itineraries overnight here; others walk through. It is about 1–1.5 hours above Low Camp.
When can you see a sea of clouds on Mardi Himal?
A sea of clouds below the ridge is most common in the late afternoon or early morning in October, November and spring, after warm, still days. It is not guaranteed. In the monsoon the cloud usually engulfs the ridge entirely. Ask your lodge owner, who watches the patterns daily.
Is Badal Danda a good place to overnight?
Yes, if lodge space allows. Sleeping at about 3,200 m helps acclimatisation before High Camp and gives sunset and sunrise views. Lodges are small and basic, with limited rooms, so book through your guide. Some trekkers prefer Low Camp, which has more lodges and is lower and warmer.
