Tallo Durbar museum and the Gorkha bazaar
Visit the lower palace, Tallo Durbar, in Gorkha bazaar, now home to the Gorkha Museum with exhibits on the Shah kings and the unification of Nepal, then walk the old bazaar streets and temples below.

Tallo Durbar, the lower palace, stands in a walled garden near the bazaar, a large brick building with carved wooden windows around a courtyard. It now houses the Gorkha Museum, which tells the story of the Shah dynasty from Drabya Shah's conquest in 1559 to Prithvi Narayan Shah's campaigns, with weapons, documents, portraits and objects of court life.
Spend an hour inside, then walk into the bazaar. The streets around the old centre have Newar-style houses with carved windows, small temples and shops selling brass, cloth and sweets. Look for local tea houses serving dahi chiura and sel roti. The atmosphere is that of a working district town rather than a tourist centre.
Combine this with the climb to the upper palace on the same day, ideally the durbar at dawn and the museum in the afternoon. Check museum opening days and hours locally, as they can change, and note that photography may not be allowed inside.
