Sunrise on Annapurna South from upper Ghandruk
Climb through the sleeping village before dawn to a terrace in upper Ghandruk and watch first light hit Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre across the Modi Khola gorge, while the village wakes below.

Annapurna South, at 7,219 m, is the mountain that defines Ghandruk. It rises directly across the Modi Khola gorge, with Hiunchuli in front of it and Machhapuchhre to the right, and on clear mornings it catches the sun well before the village does.
Set an alarm for about 30 minutes before sunrise and walk up the stone lanes to a terrace or the upper lodges. The peaks turn pink, then gold, then white, while the gorge below stays in blue shadow. Smoke rises from kitchen fires, roosters start up and families lead buffalo out. It is the quiet hour of a busy village.
Bring a warm jacket; it is often near freezing from December to February. Photographers should use a telephoto lens for the summit and a wide lens to include the village roofs. Breakfast is waiting in the lodge when you come down.

What mountains can you see from Ghandruk?
Ghandruk faces Annapurna South (7,219 m), Hiunchuli (6,441 m), Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) and, from some points, Gangapurna and Annapurna III. Annapurna South dominates. Where is the best sunrise spot in Ghandruk?
The upper village and the terraces of lodges facing north give the clearest view of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre at sunrise. Many lodges have rooftop or terrace viewpoints. Ask your lodge owner; they will point you to the best spot. There is no single official viewpoint, and you do not need to walk far.
Is it cold in Ghandruk in the morning?
At 2,012 m, mornings are cool year-round and cold from December to February, often near or slightly below freezing. October and November dawns are around 5–10 °C. Lodges rarely have heated rooms, though dining rooms may have a stove. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves for sunrise, and a sleeping bag for comfort at night.
