Sunrise over the Himalaya from Thani Mai
Climb 30–40 minutes from the bazaar to the hilltop shrine of Thani Mai for sunrise on a long line of peaks, from Dhaulagiri through the Annapurnas and Manaslu to Langtang, rising above a sea of cloud in the valleys.

Leave your inn in the dark with a headlamp. A stone path climbs from the bazaar past houses and fields to the summit of Thani Mai hill, where a small shrine to the mother goddess stands among trees. It takes 30–40 minutes at a steady pace. Locals come up to pray at dawn, and you may hear the bell before you reach the top.
On a clear morning between October and February the view is long: Dhaulagiri far to the west, Annapurna I and South, Machhapuchhre, Lamjung Himal, Manaslu and Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal and on very clear days Langtang. Below, the Marsyangdi and Seti valleys are often filled with cloud, with hilltops poking through like islands.
Stay until the sun is well up and the mountains turn white, then walk down for breakfast in the bazaar. Be quiet near the shrine and do not climb on it. In spring, haze often hides the peaks; it is still a pleasant dawn walk.

Questions
Which mountains can you see from Bandipur?
On clear days, from Thani Mai and Tundikhel you can see a long section of the Himalaya: Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I and South, Machhapuchhre, Lamjung Himal, Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal and, in very clear conditions, Langtang. October to February gives the best visibility; spring haze often hides the range.
How long is the walk to Thani Mai?
The climb from Bandipur bazaar to Thani Mai hilltop takes about 30–40 minutes on a stone path, with some steep sections. Leave about an hour before sunrise with a headlamp. The descent takes 20–30 minutes. It is suitable for most people with reasonable fitness; take care on loose stones in the dark.
Is Tundikhel or Thani Mai better for views in Bandipur?
Thani Mai, being higher, has the wider and more open view, especially for sunrise, while Tundikhel is closer, flat and easy, good for sunset and for those who prefer not to climb. On clear mornings both show the Himalaya. Do Tundikhel at sunset and Thani Mai at sunrise.
