Walk the Kali Gandaki from Jomsom to Marpha

An easy half-day walk south along the Kali Gandaki from Jomsom to Marpha, with Nilgiri behind and Dhaulagiri ahead, on old trading trails and village paths away from the jeep road. A good first walk in Mustang.

We leave Jomsom after breakfast and walk south along the west bank, then follow paths that keep off the jeep road where they can. The valley is broad here, with gravel flats and braided channels of the Kali Gandaki. Behind you Nilgiri stands above Jomsom; ahead, Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak fill the view as you descend gently, about 30 m of height loss over 6 km. Most of the walk is on flat or gently falling ground.

Along the way are the orchards and fields of Syang, one of the Teen Gaunle Thakali villages, and the old trail used for centuries by mule and yak caravans carrying salt and grain. Your guide will point out the old chortens, the irrigation channels and the dry hillsides where blue sheep sometimes come down to graze in winter. Stop for tea in Syang if you want a break; it is roughly halfway.

We reach Marpha in about two hours, in time for lunch and an afternoon in the orchards or at the gompa. If the wind has started early, it will be at your back on this direction of walk, one reason we prefer it to the uphill direction. Luggage goes by jeep, so you only carry a daypack with water, sunscreen and a windproof. In winter, start a little later, once the sun has reached the valley floor.

Questions

How long is the walk from Jomsom to Marpha?

It is about 6 km and takes 2–2.5 hours at an easy pace, with very little climbing; the trail loses a little height going south. It is one of the easiest walks in Mustang and suits most fitness levels. Start in the morning so the afternoon wind does not catch you, and send luggage ahead by jeep.

Is the Jomsom–Marpha walk on the road?

Partly. The jeep road runs down the valley, but good guides use village paths, riverbank trails and sections of the old caravan route to keep you off it for much of the way. Dust from passing vehicles is the main nuisance, so carry a buff. In the monsoon, river-level paths may be flooded.

Can I walk from Marpha to Tukuche as well?

Yes. Tukuche is about 7 km further south, roughly 2 hours on a similar easy trail, passing Chhairo on the opposite bank. Many people walk Jomsom–Marpha one day and Marpha–Tukuche the next, staying a night in each, which makes a relaxed two-day introduction to Thakali villages.
