Late light at Rani Ghat
Spend the end of the afternoon on the Kali Gandaki below the palace, watching the light leave the gorge, pilgrims at the ghat and the white walls of Rani Mahal turning gold above the water.

The Kali Gandaki is one of Nepal's holiest rivers, flowing from beyond Mustang through the deepest gorges in the country. At Rani Ghat it is wide, fast and cold, with boulders along the edge and a shingle bank below the palace.
In the late afternoon the sun drops behind the hills and the gorge fills with shadow, but the palace on its rock catches the last light. It is the time for photographs and for sitting quietly on the stones.
Pilgrims bathe at the ghat, and sometimes a cremation takes place on the bank. Your guide will explain the rituals and where to stand so you do not intrude. Then we drive back up to Tansen as night falls.

Questions
Can I swim in the Kali Gandaki at Rani Mahal?
No, we strongly advise against it. The Kali Gandaki is fast, cold and has strong currents and hidden rocks, even when it looks calm. Every year people drown in Nepal's rivers. Paddle at the very edge if you wish, with care, but do not go in.
Is it respectful to visit during a cremation?
Yes, if you stay at a distance, keep quiet and do not photograph mourners or the pyre. Riverbank cremations are part of Hindu life, and families do not mind respectful observers. Follow your guide's lead on where to stand, and leave if asked.
When is the best light at Rani Mahal?
The palace catches warm light in the late afternoon, about an hour before sunset, while the gorge below falls into shadow. Mornings give soft, even light. From October to March skies are clearest. Leave enough time to drive back to Tansen before full dark.
