Dawn mist over the Kudan pond

Arrive at sunrise in winter, when mist sits on the pond beside Kudan's stupas and the fields are white with dew, for the quietest light of the Kapilvastu plain and a chance of herons, egrets and cranes.

From November to February the Terai wakes under fog. At Kudan that fog lifts slowly off the pond, and for half an hour the brick stupa bases, the trees and the water turn soft and grey-gold. It is the best light of the day for photographs and for sitting quietly.

We leave Lumbini in the dark, about an hour's drive, or start from Taulihawa if you have stayed there. Egrets and pond herons work the edges of the water, and on some mornings sarus cranes call from the fields nearby.

Afterwards there is tea and fresh curd in Taulihawa before the drive to Tilaurakot, which opens as the sun warms the ruins.

Questions

How cold is it at dawn in Kapilvastu in winter?

In December and January dawn temperatures in Kapilvastu are often 7–10 °C, with damp fog that feels colder. By midday it warms to 18–22 °C. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and closed shoes for the early start, and layers you can remove later.

Is fog guaranteed at Kudan in winter?

No. Fog is common from mid-December to late January but not certain, and some mornings it is too thick to see the far side of the pond. November and February often give lighter mist with clearer views. We watch the forecast and adjust timing the evening before.

Can I use a drone at Kudan?

Drones in Nepal need permission from the Civil Aviation Authority and often local authorities, and flying over heritage sites is restricted. Do not fly one at Kudan or other Kapilvastu sites without written permission. Rules change, so check current status before you travel.
