First day on the Langtang trail to Lama Hotel
The opening day of the Langtang Valley trek, climbing from about 1,460 m to Lama Hotel at about 2,470 m along the Langtang Khola, through subtropical forest, bamboo and oak, with langur monkeys and the sound of the river all day.

From Syabrubesi the trail crosses the river and follows the Langtang Khola east into a narrow gorge. The first hours are warm, through mixed forest with bamboo thickets, ferns and moss. Grey langur monkeys move through the trees, and in spring you may see red panda signs higher up, although the animals themselves are shy and rarely seen.
Tea stops at small settlements such as Bamboo, at about 1,970 m, break the day. The climb is steady rather than steep, with stone steps in places and a few suspension bridges. By early afternoon you reach Lama Hotel, a cluster of lodges in the forest at around 2,470 m, where the air is noticeably cooler.
This section lies on the Langtang Khola, a different river from the one that flooded in August 2026, and trekking operators reported it was not directly damaged. Even so, check current status before you travel, and walk with a licensed guide as required since April 2023.

Questions
How hard is the walk from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel?
It is a moderate day of about 6 to 7 hours with roughly 1,000 m of ascent, mostly steady uphill on stone trail with some steps and bridges. It is warm and humid in the lower forest, so start early, carry 2 litres of water and take breaks at Bamboo. No technical skills are needed.
Will I see red pandas on the Langtang trail?
Possibly, but do not count on it. Red pandas live in the bamboo and rhododendron forest of Langtang National Park, mostly between about 2,500 and 3,500 m, and are shy and active at dawn and dusk. Grey langurs, birds and pheasants are far more common. A quiet early walk with a local guide gives the best chance.
Are the lodges at Lama Hotel open?
Lama Hotel has several family-run lodges that normally open in the trekking seasons. After the August 2026 flood, which disrupted the road to Syabrubesi, some lodges in the valley closed temporarily. Our team confirms which lodges are operating before each departure; check current status before you travel.
