We leave Samagaon at first light and pass Birendra Tal before climbing steep moraine ridges above the Manaslu glacier. The trail gains around 1,300 m, with loose rock and long zigzags. Above 4,500 m the air is thin and the pace slows; most people take 4 to 5 hours to reach base camp.

Base camp sits on a rocky shelf with prayer flags and, in the autumn and spring climbing seasons, the tents of expeditions. Manaslu's summit ridges and icefall rise above, while across the valley you see the peaks along the Tibetan border. On clear days the view is enormous.

Descend the same way, carefully on the loose sections. We set a firm turnaround time and stop for anyone showing signs of altitude sickness. It is a hard day, but trekkers who do it often find the Larkya La easier.

Questions

How high is Manaslu Base Camp?

Manaslu Base Camp is at about 4,800 m, roughly 1,300 m above Samagaon. The hike takes 7 to 8 hours return. It is higher than Larkya La's approach camp at Dharamsala and nearly as high as the pass at 5,106 m, so it is excellent acclimatisation if you feel well.

Is the Manaslu Base Camp hike dangerous?

It is demanding rather than technical. Risks are altitude sickness, loose rock on moraine and sudden weather changes. Go with a guide, start early, set a turnaround time and descend at the first sign of serious symptoms such as severe headache, vomiting or confusion.

Can I see Manaslu summit from base camp?

On clear mornings you see the upper ridges and icefall of Manaslu, though the true summit at 8,163 m is often hidden behind nearer slopes. The best full view of the mountain is actually from Samagaon, Pungyen Gompa and the trail toward Samdo.
