We set off after an early breakfast, following the ridge south-east from Nagarkot. The first part runs through forest and along the top of the hill, with the Himalaya to the north if the morning is clear. The path then drops through small villages and terraced farmland, with long views over the hills of Kavre.

Midway, we stop at a village tea shop or a small bhanjyang, a saddle on the ridge, for tea and snacks. The route continues along farm tracks and paths, sometimes on rough roads, past schools, temples and fields of maize and vegetables. Village life carries on around us.

In the afternoon we reach Dhulikhel, an old Newar town on the Araniko Highway, for the night. Dhulikhel's own views of the Himalaya are excellent, and the next day you can continue to Namobuddha and Panauti or return to Kathmandu. Total distance is about 15 km.

Questions

How long is the Nagarkot to Dhulikhel hike?

About 15 km and 5 to 6 hours with stops, mostly downhill or level, from around 2,100 m to about 1,550 m. It suits walkers of average fitness. Parts follow dirt roads. A guide is recommended, as the route has many junctions.

Can I send my luggage ahead from Nagarkot to Dhulikhel?

Yes. Most travellers send main bags by car to their Dhulikhel hotel and walk with a light daypack. We arrange this as part of the hike. Carry water, snacks, sun protection and a warm layer for the morning chill.

Is the Nagarkot to Dhulikhel trek suitable for beginners?

Yes, for active beginners. There are no high altitudes or technical sections, but the full day on foot and some steep, loose descents need reasonable fitness and good shoes. It makes a good warm-up for a Himalayan trek.
